Last night I gave a presentation at the Developers Guild on various resources available to learn how to develop against SharePoint 2010. We had a great crowd and many of the attendees asked for the slide deck. I have the deck available on a sky drive for you to down load. The deck has several links to free training resources, links to Andrew Connell’s posting about setting up your development environment, and a few companies that offer training at a cost.

Hope fully this information will give you a real good jump start on SharePoint 2010 development.

The link should be posted on the Developers Guild web site soon, but I have posted it below as well.

Saturday 15th was the Charlotte Code Camp, and it was a great success! We had over 370 people register, and last I heard, we had over 200 during one session.

We had 10 tracks running covering content from helping with your job, to SQL, .Net and of course SharePoint. I was very pleasantly surprised to see so many show up for my SharePoint preso, especially since SharePoint Saturday Charlotte was just a few weeks ago, and SharePoint Saturday DC was on Saturday as well.

I gave a presentation on the options available for learning SharePoint 2010 Development. I had a great turn out, but unfortunately ran a bit over. <blushes>

I was impressed with the enthusiasm in the room. The attendees were there to learn about training options for developing SP2010 solutions, but when I polled the class, 90% had yet to even see SharePoint 2010! Doh! So I spent some time showing, very briefly, the new UI and the Developer Dashboard in 2010, before showing off VS 2010 by making and deploying a very simple workflow.

I apologize again to the attendees for getting my ending time wrong and not being able to show as much as I would have liked.

Here is a link to my presentation for you all. – http://cid-29e046e8cfc92645.skydrive.live.com/browse.aspx/.Public/CodeCamp2010

If you have any troubles accessing this, please post a comment for me and I will address it.

Thank you all for the great reviews and feedback!!

See you around the community!

Brian

For those of you that have been hearing about this new creature called PowerPivot, here is a link to the PowerPivot home page – http://www.powerpivot.com/

You can find some very nice demos, movies and access to a hands-on-lab to check it out.

This is a very powerful tool that will enable users to create some very nice user generated BI solutions against large amounts of data, and do it quickly. There is also a PowerPivot for Excel add-in for excel 2010.

It really is impressive to see the responsiveness of the tool. however, that responsiveness comes with a price.

You will need SQL Server 2008 R2 to use PowerPivot and the price of that is going up!

Rather than me retype everything, here is a link to Brent Ozar’s ( SQL MVP) article about it.

Just to give you an idea of the changes… “

R2 Enterprise Edition doesn’t come with unlimited virtualization. To get that feature, you have to spring for the new Datacenter Edition, which costs around $60k per CPU socket”

He has many more gems at this link – http://www.brentozar.com/archive/2009/09/sql-server-2008-r2-frequently-asked-questions/

Well worth the read if you are considering using R2!.

Just thought you should know what is coming up!

Enjoy!

Another really nice feature that can be activated for individual views, is “InLine Editing”. This is “off” by default when you create a list or new view.

Here is what the option looks like when you modify a view…

When you turn this on, it will add an new icon to the items. This icon looks a lot like the “Edit” icon you are used to seeing in 2007.

See below…

When you click on this edit icon, it will place the item into edit mode and you will see on the screen that your fields change from being labels to being a control appropriate for editing its content ( textbox, drop down, multi-line textbox…). You also see two new icons on the far left; 1 for Save, and 1 for cancel. The edit icon as well as the save and cancel icons, will appear even if you have not turned on Tabular view ( See Previous Post on Tabular views ).

This can be a much nicer User Experience ( UX ) than always opening up a new dialog window or new page to perform the editing.

Now, good news bad news…. Keep in mind that this is activated at the “VIEW” level. That means that only the fields included in the view can be edited in this way.

So what you ask??

Here is a scenario for you… you have a list that has one or more required fields. You create a view that does not include all or any of the required fields and you activate inline editing for the view. When a user edits the item or adds a new item, by clicking the green plus sign, , the only fields that are made available or editable are the ones in the view. This means you can create a new item and save it without adding any content to the “required” fields, but the item is still saved. Now you have entries in your list that do not have required fields populated with valid data. To me this is a bad thing.

I hope they will address this before RTM, but you never know. So watch out for this and be careful how you use it.

Hope this helps.

<< UPDATED 3/30/2010>>

Forgot to mention that in-line editing will not work when you use the “Preview Pane” style. I wish it would, but at this time, it does not.

Enjoy!

The options available when creating custom views has changed in 2010. They have added some pretty nice options in this release.

One of the changes is the option for ‘Tabular View’. However, it is something of a misnomer because it does not actually create what the average Joe/Josephine would call a “Tab”.

You see this option when you choose to modify a view. Here is a look at it when expanded in the ‘Modify View’ page.

As the description explains, this option allows you to take certain action against multiple list items at once by exposing check boxes for each item. This option is selected by default and gives you the look as shown below. Below you can see that I checked the box that allows me to select all the items in the current page. I say ‘current page’ because if you have paging enabled, and are only displaying a subset of the total items, only the items in that current page are selected to take action against. So think of it as “select all that are visible right now”.

Here is a look at the list when ‘Tabular View’ is not selected.

Notice the check-box to select all the items is not gone, and you don’t have the check box for each individual item either.

I think this is a very nice feature and am glad to see it.

Enjoy!

Hopefully this will be the first of many entries on 2010. Now that I have some breathing room and a working install of 2010, I thought it high time I got playing and writing about it.

In case you are not aware, SP 2010 now has “The Ribbon” ( for some, you will hear happy music here, for others you may here the music from the movie Psycho )

Personally, I like the ribbon a lot. Yes it is different and Yes you have to learn where everything is all over again. But once you get used to it, I hope you will learn to embrace it too.

So, on with the show…

One of the UI changes that I like, and will have to get used to, is how they expose the views for a list. it is no,longer on the right side of the screen, and it is no longer attached to the title bar.

It is now incorporated in the Navigation Breadcrumbs! Wha, wha, whaaat?!

Yes, here is look at the breadcrumbs when you land on the default AllItems page ( which is what? A view, same as in 2007 )

Notice to the right of “All Tasks” is a drop-down arrow. When you click on this, it will open a pop out menu with the list of available views and commands.

When you select a view, the name is now shown in the breadcrumbs and your view is displayed.

Very nice! So now you know where they moved your view to!

Enjoy!
