WSS: Error exporting to spreadsheet

Posted by Brian Gough on July 29, 2005

Event: Export to spreadsheet

Error: “You do not have adequate permissions to modify this list. Changes to your data can not be saved.”

Possible Cause: This error can occur if the list you are trying to export has “Require content approval for submitted items? ” turned on. Even if you are an Administrator of the site or systems administrator, this error will be thrown.

Resolution: Turn off the “Require content approval for submitted items? ” setting as follows..
From the lists main page, click ‘Modify settings and columns’, then click ‘Change general settings’, then select the ‘No’ radio button under ‘Require content approval for submitted items?’.
Next, export the list to the spreadsheet and update your data, and save it back again.
You will then need to go back to the General settings screen and select the ‘Yes’ radio button under ‘Require content approval for submitted items?’ to activate approvals again.

Addt’l Comments: Even if all the items/documents in the list were entered by yourself, you will still get this error when the spreadsheet tries to open.

I hope this was useful.
